If your number hasn’t been registered with the Do Not Call list, it’s still sitting in databases being bought and sold by marketing companies — including ones that don’t follow the rules as carefully as they should.
Here’s how to get ahead of it.
Step 1: Register with the National Do Not Call Registry
Go to donotcall.gov and add your number. Takes two minutes.
Within 31 days, legitimate companies are legally required to stop calling. It won’t stop every call — but it dramatically cuts the volume from businesses operating above board.
Step 2: Let your iPhone do the screening
If you have an iPhone, there’s a built-in tool most people never turn on.
Go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Screen Unknown Callers.
You have two options:
“Ask Reason for Calling” — Your phone answers unknown calls on your behalf and asks the caller to identify themselves and explain why they’re calling. You see their response before deciding whether to pick up. No more interrupted dinners for calls you’d never take anyway.
“Silence Unknown Callers” — Unknown numbers go straight to voicemail without your phone ever ringing. If it’s important, they’ll leave a message.
Also flip on Spam / Unknown Callers filtering under Settings → Phone. It automatically flags likely spam and routes it away from your main call list.
Step 3: Three simple habits that help
- Don’t answer numbers you don’t recognize
- Block anyone who calls more than once
- Save the numbers that matter so they always get through
